She had it: Mafer Vargas opened OnlyFans in December 2020 and closed it before winning the Simón Bolívar (Guayas) mayoral race in 2023. Her story.

She used to. María Fernanda Vargas, known across Ecuador as Mafer Vargas, opened an OnlyFans account (nicknamed the “página azul,” or blue page, in Latin America) in December 2020, according to El Comercio. She later closed it: in February 2023, after winning the mayor's office of Simón Bolívar canton in Guayas province, she explained on social media that she had shut it down months before the vote, the same newspaper reported. We have found no later reports that she reopened it.
She is an Ecuadorian model who was 32 years old in 2023, according to Vistazo and Noticias RCN. She holds a degree in Social Communication from the State University of Milagro, has studied law and, according to El Comercio and El Diario, owns a beauty center in Guayaquil. Metro Ecuador notes that much of the public first saw her on the show El poder del amor.
Her public profile blends entertainment and politics. She is a member of Revolución Ciudadana, the movement of former president Rafael Correa, and before running for mayor she had already sought a council seat in the same canton, according to El Diario, which reported in August 2022 that she had registered her candidacy with the Guayas office of the National Electoral Council.
The figures she shared made headlines in 2022. Metro Ecuador and El Comercio reported that her subscribers paid 30 dollars a month, the most common price among Ecuadorian accounts at the time, and that she had said in an interview that she billed about 14,000 dollars in three months, plus 200-dollar tips. El Diario described her then as the self-proclaimed “queen” of the platform.
Vistazo reported a slightly different version: according to that magazine, she used the site for seven or eight months and said she earned 20,000 dollars in four. Mafer Vargas has always said part of that money went to social causes. She said that with her first month's earnings she bought about 5,000 toys that she handed out in poor neighborhoods of Guayaquil and Simón Bolívar, and that she also funded the Una Mano Amiga foundation.
The closure coincided with her move into politics. During the 2023 campaign her rivals criticized her past on the platform, and she replied on social media that she had not had the account for months. According to El Comercio, she explained that she had opened it to earn income to pay a team of ten people, support her household and keep up her charity work.
In the local elections of February 5, 2023, she won 41.76% of the vote with 96.77% of the tally sheets counted, far ahead of María José Cisneros of the CREO-Centro Democrático alliance, according to National Electoral Council figures cited by El Comercio and Vistazo. Noticias RCN added that she would take office on May 14 that year. Her victory made news across the region: the Spanish outlet The Objective ran a profile of her in March 2023.
As mayor she stayed in the spotlight. In September 2023 Vistazo covered her exchange with Cynthia Viteri, then mayor of Guayaquil, over tattoos and how an official should dress. Vargas said she got her tattoos before taking office and dresses as she likes without losing focus on her job. More stories from the country are in our Ecuador section, such as that of Tami Rivera.
